Shortstop Kiko Garcia lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 2 RBI as the
Chicago Fire topped the Columbus Redbirds by a score of 5 to 4 at Busch
Stadium.
Chicago claimed the early lead in the first inning when they scored 2 runs on
2 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Dave Winfield who helped quiet
the crowd when he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run.
Columbus made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed
runs across.
Mike Caldwell(2-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 innings and allowing
3 runs. Caldwell got relief help from Tim Stoddard who gained credit for his
3rd save. Steve Carlton(2-2) was the losing pitcher. He was knocked around,
surrendering 5 runs in 4 innings.
'Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals' said Ed Karpowicz after the game.
'We lost this game tonight because we didn't follow the instructions every
Little Leaguer hears every day.'
