Jim Kern(1-0) was the winner as Portland Beavers shutout the Houston Astros by
a 2 to 0 score at Tiger Stadium.
Portland came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 8th inning
plating 2 runs on 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Mickey Rivers got
things going when he hit a single. Dave Concepcion struck out, unable to
help the rally. Darrell Evans then blasted a two-run home run. Houston went
down quietly in the 9th.
Steve Rogers(1-1) took the loss. He pitched 8 innings giving up only 6 hits
and no walks.
