Al Kaline had 2 base hits as the Springfield Bulls staged a dramatic comeback
over the Baltimore Orioles by a score of 4 to 3 at Illini
Reservation.
Springfield had the winning rally in the bottom of the 9th inning scoring 2
runs on 4 hits. Earl Williams led off and started the rally when he laced a
base-hit. Ron Blomberg got his chance to keep things going, but he went down
on strikes. Amos Otis then laced a one-base hit. Joe Torre dug into the
batters box next, but he struck out. Richie Hebner came to the plate and
stroked a base-hit. Kaline kept things alive and delivered a single.
Springfield finished with 15 hits while Baltimore ended up with 4.
Pete Richert(1-0) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the win. Ken Sanders(0-1)
was the loser in relief. He pitched 2/3 of an inning giving up 3 hits and no walks.
'Now there is a lesson in perseverance for you,' Kaline noted. 'It was
looking pretty dim there for a while, but we just kept plugging away and it
really paid off in spades! And it was great to see the crowd go crazy there
at the end!'
