Fred Newman went 9 strong innings and shortstop Leo Cardenas had 3 base hits
and 3 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Hartford Dark Blues by a
score of 10 to 1 at Ball Club Grounds.
Pittsburgh jumped on top of Hartford in the top of the 2nd inning scoring a
single run using 2 hits. After an out was recorded, John Romano drew a walk.
Cardenas stepped up to the plate and he smacked a single. Bill Mazeroski
then lined a one-base hit scoring the run. Pittsburgh banged out 11 on the
night.
The win went to Newman(2-0) who allowed 1 run in the game. Sandy Koufax(2-1)
was the loser. His ERA increased from 2.50 to 5.18 as he allowed 9 runs in 6
and 1/3 innings.
