IBB- A.Van Slyke (by C.Puleo, 6th inning)
At Osage Park the San Francisco Golden Seals were battered 10 to 5 by the
Pittsburgh Pirates.
Pittsburgh wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning when they
scored 4 runs on 4 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Glenn Wilson
who silenced the crowd when he laced a one-base hit bringing in two
baserunners. San Francisco had a chance to come back in the 9th but they
came up short.
John Smiley(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 and 1/3 innings and
allowing 2 runs. The losing pitcher was Rick Mahler(0-1). Pittsburgh knocked
him around a bit, as he gave up 7 runs in 3 and 2/3 innings.
Pete DeStefano was clearly disappointed after the game. 'It was a manager's
nightmare out there', he said, 'We should have had this one.'
