Tony Perez connected with a 'big fly' and had 3 RBI as the Boston Beaneaters
won a dandy at Fenway Park over the Manchester Minutemen, 9 to 8.
The deciding run was scored by Boston in the bottom of the 9th. Roberto
Clemente stroked a single. After an out was recorded, Mike Burdulis came up
and he called for a steal which was successful. Al Downing then unleashed a
wild pitch giving Boston the win and sending the home town fans into a
frenzy. Manchester was not lacking for run support as they scored in 5
separate innings, yet victory eluded them as they seemed to forget that
pitching is also needed to win ballgames.
Joe Hoerner(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 1 inning.
Downing(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief. He allowed 1 hit and no walks
in 1/3 of an inning.
